Tank Painting on the Gulf Coast: Restoring a Protective Barrier

In the world of industrial painting, fresh paint and coatings aren’t only about adding style, but also about applying a high-performance system that protects your surfaces. A lot is going to be asked of it, and it needs to be up to the task.

In this case, our client was dealing with a number of environmental stressors. For one thing, this area of the Gulf Coast is flooded by our Texas sun, putting a major strain on tanks that sit fully exposed to unrelenting UV rays.

At the same time, the saltwater in the atmosphere makes corrosion a major, ongoing issue as metal surfaces are weakened and eaten from the outside in.

Tank Coating on a Large Scale

Everything’s bigger in Texas, and that includes the projects!

Our team was invited down to revamp and transform these tanks, as well as apply a fresh coating that could handle the strain, and would meet our client’s specs. Our work involved over 88 tanks, and many were so close together that we needed to use bosun chairs to safely lower our crew members between them.

Houston weather is also fickle during this winter season. We had to keep a close eye on the weather, pausing our work when rain storms blew through, and then efficiently resuming when the surfaces were ready once again.

We also had to frequently check the thickness of the new coating, ensuring that our application lined up with our client’s specific requirements.

As a finishing touch, we installed logos on two of the tanks, restoring a fresh, attractive, and well-branded style.

• TWIC cards (since we were working in a port)
